I designed this course partly because of my frequent use of silhouette in painting and illustration. It has many connotations with childhood, it is also sometimes a visual code that is instantly recognisable through various ages and cultures. People who come on the course have one thing in common, they are charmed by silhouette work in all or some of its manifestations!
It is well suited to part-time courses, and I have run it as a one week block course for the Oxford Summer
School.
From tribal art to gothic mannerism, and from shadow play to fairytale illustration, artists, craftsmen and cartoonists have all contributed to the world of silhouette. This course gives a fresh view to the tradition of silhouette across the visual arts, and explores its techniques in a series of sketchbook exercises.
